2018 Year end market review
After a tranquil 2017 for the markets, 2018 started out strong for stocks, but it certainly didn’t end that way. The markets did a complete 180 this past year. Volatility returned in a big way, and many leading stocks faltered towards the end of year. Here are some of the more notable stats from 2018:
2018 market ETF performance
DIA = -5.73%
SPY = -6.35%
QQQ = -0.96%
IWM = -12.17%
Top 5 market caps of 2018
Microsoft (MSFT) = $813.63B
Apple (AAPL) = $768.42B
Amazon (AMZN) = $752.71B
Google (GOOGL) = $727.25B
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) = $511.02B
Notable 2018 returns
Tilray (TLRY) = +215.05%
S&P 500 ETF (SPY) = -6.35%
Short volatility ETF (SVXY) = -92.42%
2018 was the year of the VIXpocalypse! This year saw the VIX have its biggest 1 day up move in its history! (See chart below)
2018 also saw the markets finally have a -10% correction, after not seeing one for almost 2 years! In fact, the S&P 500 also corrected -20% from its all time highs. This is the first -20% correction since 2011! (See chart below)
2018 was a very interesting year! I would like to wish everyone a safe and prosperous New Year! Cheers!
